What are researchers at Kennedy Krieger doing to learn more about OI? OI Child in Wheel ChairCurrently, no cure exists for OI. Rather, treatment is aimed at preventing or correcting symptoms. At Kennedy Krieger, however, researchers are making strides to improve current treatment regimens and to learn more about how certain changes in the body affect the course of OI.

Specifically, researchers at Kennedy Krieger are studying how certain drugs, when administered intravenously, help increase bone density. In addition, they are investigating the effects of puberty on bone stability in children with OI. This investigation is particularly exciting because researchers have noted a pattern among individuals with OI, in which fractures tend to decrease at the onset of puberty and then increase again after adolescence.

By evaluating changes in bone mineral density and muscle strength during puberty, researchers may gain telling clues about the disorder. Answers to these questions may bring researchers closer to effectively treating, and maybe even one day preventing or reversing the disorder.
